Tips for Sewing Pointe Shoes

Congratulations on getting your pointe shoes - so exciting! We know that sewing can seem a bit intimidating at first, but sewing your own pointe shoes is a great skill to learn so that you can get them just right for your foot.

Angle Ribbons & Elastic Toward Front of Shoe

Sewing Your Ribbons:

  1. Cut the ribbons in 4 equal pieces

  2. Melt the ends with a match or lighter (so they do not fray) ***A responsible adult should do this step

  3. Place the ribbons on a slight diagonal toward the front of the shoe & pin them (see pictures for placement)

  4. Sew around the edge of the ribbon with a loop stitch, then a running stitch along the top edge below the drawstring casing (see picture) ***Try to sew only through the lining, not the outside satin

Sewing Your Elastics:

  1. Cut the elastics into 2 equal pieces

  2. Place the elastics on a slight diagonal toward the front of the shoe, farther back toward the heel of the shoe than the ribbons, & pin them

  3. Sew around the edge of the elastic with a loop stitch, then a running stitch along the top edge below the drawstring casing

  4. Once you know which feet your pointe shoes feel best on, you can write an 'R' in the right shoe and an 'L' in the left shoe

  5. Tie the ribbons, with them on the correct feet, and trim to a couple inches long

  6. Re-melt the ends of the ribbons that you trimmed

Once you have your shoes sewn, you can put them on and walk normally in them around your house to start breaking them in.

How To Tie Your Ribbons:

  1. Kneel up with one knee back on the floor and the other up front at a 90-degree angle with your foot flat on the floor.

  2. Cross the ribbons in front of your ankle, then behind, then in front, then bring them around to the inside of your ankle.

  3. Tie in a double knot and tuck in the bottom.
